The USSR faced an acute housing shortage in the 1950s. Due to the massive relocation of people to cities and the dilapidation of the housing stock, the country needed new solutions that would make it possible to solve the problem in the shortest possible time. On July 31, 1957, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, headed by Nikita Khrushchev, adopted a resolution “On the development of housing construction in the USSR.” 

Khrushchev buildings began to be actively built on the eve of the first manned flight into space. These two events marked the beginning of a new era. The similarity of the internal characteristics of the spacecraft and the apartments in the new buildings was not accidental. The architects preferred compactness, which implied human mobility. A woman in the kitchen could reach the refrigerator, stove, distant cabinet and even open the window in between cooking borscht and washing dishes. 

Now I live in a typical Khrushchev building. I peered into walls, apartments and houses in order to recognize in them a cosmic belonging. What a message is kept in the shadows of the past years, which have witnessed the development of the whole country after the conquest of space.

В 1950-х годах СССР столкнулся с острой проблемой нехватки жилья. Из-за массового переселения людей в города и обветшания жилого фонда, страна нуждалась в новых решениях, которые позволили бы в кратчайшие сроки решить проблему. 31 июля 1957 года ЦК КПСС во главе с Никитой Хрущевым принял постановление “О развитии жилищного строительства в СССР”.

Хрущёвки начали активно строить накануне первого полёта человека в космос. Эти два события стали началом новой эры. Схожесть внутренних характеристик космического корабля и квартир в новых домах была не случайна. Архитекторы отдавали предпочтение компактности, которая предполагала мобильность человека. Женщина на кухне могла дотянуться до холодильника, плиты, дальнего шкафчика и даже открыть форточку в перерыве между готовкой борща и мытьем посуды.

Сейчас я живу в типовой хрущёвке. Я вглядывался в стены, квартиры и дома, чтобы распознать в них космическую принадлежность. Какое послание хранят в себе тени прожитых лет, которые стали свидетелями развития всей страны после покорения космоса.
